Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Traumatic Brain Injury in Underserved Populations
While much attention has focused on traumatic brain injury (TBI) in the sports context, significant care gaps exist for TBI in underserved populations. Few of the existing training materials, screening tools, and clinical, practice, and management guidelines/protocols are informed by research with persons who are exposed to intimate partner violence, interact with the criminal justice/legal systems, and/or experience housing instability. Furthermore, there is a lack of data on health outcomes of TBI across sexes, genders, race, and ethnicity and among visible minority populations. The TBI in Underserved Populations Program aims to amplify TBI knowledge and rehabilitation capacity to address care gaps and improve health outcomes for diverse underserved populations with TBI.
